Solving Hard Rock Challenges by Listening First: The Development of Weldco’s Extreme Blade

Sorensen Companies - Congruex

When Hard Rock Pushes Equipment to Its Limits

Sorensen Companies began operations in a new service area near Logan, Utah — a region known for difficult subsurface conditions. Beneath the asphalt, crews encountered large and medium-sized cobblestones, creating an extremely challenging environment for microtrenching operations.

In these conditions, existing blades were not lasting as expected. Blade life decreased rapidly, trench cleanup became more difficult, and cutting speeds slowed significantly. The hard rock conditions were limiting productivity and putting strain on equipment performance.

Designing a Blade for Extreme Conditions

Weldco partnered closely with Sorensen Companies to address the challenges head-on. Working directly with Wally and incorporating field feedback, Weldco engineers Jake and Thomas began designing a blade specifically to handle the hard, cobble-heavy conditions found in Logan.

Multiple design iterations were tested in the field using Sorensen’s equipment. Through extensive real-world testing, Weldco evaluated performance, durability, trench quality, and cutting efficiency. The new blade design consistently demonstrated improved performance in the demanding environment.

The weldco difference

After successful field validation, Weldco moved the new blade design into full production. The result was the creation of a new hard-conditions blade, now known as the “Extreme” blade.

The Extreme blade delivered longer blade life, improved cutting performance, and better trench cleanup in hard rock environments. What began as a customer-specific solution evolved into a new Weldco product designed to serve contractors operating in the toughest ground conditions.
